What is Hypnobirthing?

Hypnobirthing is a complete in-depth antenatal training programme designed to release fear and build confidence for birth.

Hypnobirthing shifts the very unhelpful and ever popular notion, that childbirth is scary & painful; by giving us the skills to use our bodies in the way that they were designed to give birth.

Hypnobirthing reminds us that our bodies are designed to carry and birth babies, we just need to learn to trust in them again without the fear and horror that has unfortunately become synonymous with childbirth.

Hypnobirthing can’t promise a perfect birth. But by informing women to make the best decisions for themselves and their babies, Hypnobirthing mothers often have fewer interventions, fewer drugs and a more positive experience.

Hypnobirthing reminds us how empowering and downright awesome giving birth can be. By understanding the science involved in childbirth you’ll come to see that there is nothing hippy about hypnobirthing.

What are the benefits of Hypnobirthing?

  1. With HypnoBirthing you are likely to experience a natural, calm, comfortable birth.
  2. You may find you don’t need any pain relief at all.
  3. It often shortens the length of labour.
  4. You will be more alert and in control.
  5. Hypnobirthing lessens the physical impact of childbirth.
  6. Your birth partner is actively involved.
  7. It can help your baby to enter the world drug free and in an atmosphere of calm and gentleness which is important for instant bonding and establishing breastfeeding.

You will learn many skills to assist you during your pregnancy and birth.

These include; breathing exercises, deep relaxations, visualisations, exercises to release fear and build confidence, comforting massage, the importance of the birth partner, how your body is designed to give birth with efficiency and comfort, how to support your body to do that and understanding how the mind and body work together.

Then through your own personal practice you will begin to understand which skills work best for you, your partner and your baby for your own birthing experience.

Given the choice, I would advise doing the course in the second trimester of your pregnancy so you can enjoy the benefits during your pregnancy as well as at the birth of your baby.  It is not so much a matter of learning facts so they are fresh in your mind, but more a matter of absorbing the information so that it becomes second nature, but KG Hypnobirthing works whenever you do it.  However, the course has been successfully taught to a woman who gave birth two days later and was still effective.

“Hypnobirthing is soundly based on established medical knowledge.”

The seeds were first sown with the work of eminent obstetrician Dr.Grantly Dick-Read.  After witnessing a homebirth in the slums of the London Docks in 1913, the mother refused any pain relief and then proceeded to give birth quickly and with no pain. Grantly Dick-Read was truly amazed.

The Mothers comment after giving birth when he asked why she refused the pain relief was “It didn’t hurt. It wasn’t meant to, was it, Doctor?”  This experience was defining, and after a career of working on the battle field and in hospitals he theorized that fear was the overriding cause that led to the pain in childbirth.  At the end of his career he wrote the book “Childbirth Without Fear”.  He hypothesized that when you are fearful, you tense up and the natural birth process is inhibited and becomes longer and consequently more painful.

If you have any more questions after the course, or are feeling overwhelmed or stressed, please please please get in touch so I can help you through whatever may be troubling you. I always include an optional and free session that we schedule closer to the end of your pregnancy in order to recap or troubleshoot anything that may be bothering you.
